Japanese ascetic training in Takaosan
Details
Takigyo, also called waterfall meditation, consists of standing underneath a waterfall - often strongly rapid - for a prolonged period of time wearing a uniform that is traditional to Buddhism. The purpose of this all isn't to feel pleasure in the pain of the surging water, of course, but to clear your mind of all thought - a core teaching in Buddhism.
It's cold, but worth it. This waterfall is nestled in the depths of Takaosan (a mountain in Hachiougi), and is fairly easy to get to as well. It's an hour train ride away from JR Shinjuku station and then a 15min cable car ride to the waterfall. The ride - especially the cable car ride - provides magnificent views of Japan as well, and is as worthwhile as the Takigyo itself.
So, enjoy the view, experience the training, and then take a soothing bath in one of the natural springs Takaosan provides. It's only a click away. Book it now! The fun awaits!
