Maid cafe: see cutting edge digital culture
Details
Japan’s Otaku (geek) culture is booming. In the past, the geek culture in Japan was rather looked down upon by the mainstream as too much of a niche, but now with vast media coverage the “otaku” culture has become a credible and fashionable subculture that is about to go major. In particular, the Maid Cafe has been rising in popularity. Along with the soaring popularity of the slang “moe” in Japan, which means something like “cute”, the maid cafe has also gained rapid growth.
These cafes are unique in that the female workers clad in maid outfits serve the customers - the maid outfits are designed to look like the ones seen on popular Japanese animations. But what’s more unique about these cafes are that these maids will play various types of card games, board games and video games with you as you dine or simply talk with one of the “maids” whilst calling you “goshunjinsama” which means, “Master”. Trust me, it’s pretty sweet.
In this activity we’ll...
• Go to a Maid Cafe in Akihabara and have a drink while we talk to the maids.
You can also play games or take pictures with the maids if you really feel up to it!
(Drink, foods are extra.)
