Hi this is Yuki Yamashita, intern at FindJPN. This is going to be out of the blue but have you ever watched “Totoro? It’s a famous film animation produced by “Ghibli”. Along with Tezuka Osamu and Fujiko F. Fujio, “GHIBLI” is well known by many around the world as pretty much representing Japanese Animation.
There’s even a theme park in Japan called GHIBLI museum that has Ghibli characters and designs! And because of “Ghibli”’s fame and popularity, this theme park is listed on guidebooks – making it a famous sightseeing area.
But, I was shocked.
I was shocked when I heard the truth from many tourists that many have a difficult time getting tickets for the GHIBLI museum. Tickets sell out usually 2 weeks before any date.
That’s why I’m going to write about how to get these tickets today for all the Ghibli fans out in the world.
~GHIBLI museum, Mitaka~
First, though, a brief description of the museum…
The GHIBLI museum is located in Mitaka city in Tokyo.
In this museum, lots of art and pictures are exhibited and there are a couple of rooms that are modeled to look like Hayao Miyazaki had been working there. It is said that Hayao Miyazaki and his coworkers came up with new ideas from things randomly scattered on the floor and on the desks.
Also there’s a small movie theater in the museum where original and short movies are played. When I visited, I watched a short movie filmed by one of Hayao Miyazaki’s pupils.
Why is it hard to get a ticket?
GHIBLI museum is so popular among Japanese people as well, which makes it difficult for Japanese people to get tickets - let alone travelers.
And entrance to the Ghibli Museum is strictly by tickets bought in advance that can only be bought at a convenience store called “Lawson”
Tickets are sold out at least one week before the actual dates (tickets for Saturday, Sunday become sold out 2 weeks before the actual dates.)
This means that tickets might be sold out by the time you land in Japan.
(The pictures below show how I tried to get tickets across two days, every two hours, but couldn’t because they were all sold out.)
