Japan's Otaku (geek) culture is booming. In the past, the geek culture in Japan was rather looked down upon by the mainstream as too geekish, but now with vast media coverage the "otaku" culture has become somewhat of a subculture and something fashionable. In particular, the Maid Cafe has been rising in popularity. With the soaring popularity of the word "moe" in Japan, which means something like "cute", the maid cafe has also gained rapid growth.

These cafes are unique in that all customers are served by female workers who wear maid outfits usually designed to look like the ones seen on popular Japanese animations.
